Shockwave technology has been around since the 1970s, initially used to break down kidney stones. Nowadays, focused shockwave energy is used to treat musculoskeletal injuries such as tendinopathy, arthritis, plantar fasciitis, neuropathy, scar adhesions, and fibrosis.
Focused Shockwave transmits acoustic waves straight to the affected tissue, creating controlled microtrauma. This mechanical stress triggers various cellular responses essential for tissue repair and regeneration. Shockwave accelerates healing by stimulating angiogenesis, stem cell migration, and fibroblast activity. Tissue repair is hastened by reducing chronic inflammation and improving tissue strength, elasticity, and functionality.
Effects on Tissue:
1. Angiogenesis: stimulates the formation of new blood vessels in the target tissue. Bringing new oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood to promote enhanced tissue healing.
2. Stem Cell Migration: Triggers mesenchymal stem cells for regeneration.
3. Collagen Fiber Formation: Promotes the synthesis and remodeling of collagen fibers in the extracellular matrix, which supports the structure and function of tissue.
4. Elastin Formation: Enhancing tissue elasticity and flexibility to restore mobility.
5. Fibroblast Activity: Increases fibroblast proliferation and activity for collagen production, crucial for tissue repair and regeneration.

Typical treatment protocols will occur 1-2 times a week for 4-8 weeks, depending on the issue and chronicity of the situation. The more chronic or systemic the issue, the more sessions may be required compared to a more acute issue. Treatments typically take 15-20 minutes per area. During treatment, we scan the body for pain points and then deliver shocks to those areas until the discomfort dissipates. The intensity can be adjusted to tolerance but may be initially uncomfortable. Side effects may include mild initial soreness and bruising, which should subside fairly quickly. The discomfort is part of how we determine the appropriate treatment area and activate stem cells and repair cells at the source. It is part of the process to restart the healing cascade.
This service is not typically reimbursable by insurance. Costs will vary depending on the size of the treatment area and the number of areas being treated. Typical costs are $150 per treatment area, with packages, options to treat more than one area during a single visit and maintenance packages available.
Results in the first few months of providing treatment in the capital district are as follows:
4 sessions for plantar fasciitis with good results and patient satisfaction
1-3 sessions for elbow and shoulder tendonitis for marked improvement in pain
1-3 sessions for sciatica with decreased radiation and improved work tolerance
1-3 sessions for chronic hip pain with improved mobility and activity tolerance
Shockwave treatment will be provided at Therapeutic Evolution in Executive Plaza behind Stuyvesant Plaza in Albany, NY. Other treatments will include Targeted Cryotherapy for inflammation and sculpting, and ANF Therapy wearable medical devices for the medical management of inflammation and holistic recovery. These will be available at this location.
